Philippines: ASEAN Weekly Disaster Update, 02 – 08 Dec 2019

REGIONAL SUMMARY: Several flooding events are reported within the region due to the continuation of Northeast Monsoon surge which brought wet condition particularly in equatorial region. During the week, Typhoon KAMMURI also have caused strong winds and heavy rainfall in the Philippines which likewise affected several event schedules in the 30th South East Asian (SEA) Games. HIGHLIGHT: Typhoon KAMMURI (locally named TISOY), which was formed in the northwestern Pacific Ocean on 25 November 2019 and developed into a Typhoon, traversed through the Philippines from period 02-04 December 2019. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), reported that at least eight (8) regions experienced heavy rains and strong while The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that at least five (5) regions were affected. Initial assessment revealed that 1.56 million persons have been affected and over 327,000 houses were damaged, along with 5 deaths and 322 injured. The NDRRMC Emergency Operations Center alert status remains in BLUE and the disaster management is still within National Government capacities.
